Can an employee who qualifies for more than one target group receive multiple tax credits or just one?
At CMS, as Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) experts and service providers since 1997, we receive a lot of questions via our website. In the case of the above question, the sender did not provide their email address, so we were unable to reply directly to them. This is one of the more common questions (FAQ), so we thought we would share, and hopefully will help others too.
CMS Says: It’s very common to see individuals who may be eligible for more than one target group for the Work Opportunity Tax Credits. A new hire may be a long-term unemployed individual who also received food stamps, or perhaps be living in an enterprise zone and also be an ex-felon, or a veteran with a disability. Ultimately, you can only claim the credit one time, up to $2,400 depending on the qualified target group. The WOTC certification, issued by the state agency, will determine which target group the employee is listed under.
