At CMS, as Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) experts and service providers since 1997, we receive a lot of questions via our website’s chat box that we try to answer:
Hello, are employers required to participate in the WOTC program? It appears it might be voluntary but wanted to confirm.
CMS Says: Hello, we’re often asked if employees are required to participate in WOTC, and it is voluntary for them. It’s also not required that EMPLOYERS participate. It’s completely optional. However, if you decide not to participate you may be losing out on tax credits. Employers in 2018 for example received $5.2 Billion in WOTC Tax Credits. With between 10-15% of new hires potentially qualifying, you could be leaving a lot of money on the table by opting out. Calculate your potental tax credits here to see an example.
