At CMS, as Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) experts and service providers since 1997, we receive a lot of questions via our website’s chat box:
CMS Says: This can really vary due to a couple of factors:
- WOTC being inactive during 2015, and then retroactively enacted, some states are still playing catch up with the backlog of application. It can take 3-6 months or longer on average. Some states do provide very quick certification online though, those can be instant.
- Did the state receive the completed application, or did they have to request a correction?
- Did the state have to request additional information from the applicant.
So depending on the state you are in, and how accurate and complete the forms are, you could get a very quick turn around time, or it could potentially take months.
What you can do while you wait
Report monthly on the number of hours the employee works, and their wages. This will help you stay organized so that when you receive WOTC certification from your state, you know how much tax credit you will receive.
