At CMS, as Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) experts and service providers since 1997, we receive a lot of questions via our website’s chat box that we try to answer:
If I have ex-felons making me eligible for wotc credit where do I report?
CMS Says: If you are hiring ex-felons who may qualify you for a tax credit under the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, you will first have to ask them to complete the forms 8850 and 9061. Once you have the forms completed they can be sent to the Department of Labor in your state for certification. Once you receive your certification, and the employee reaches 120 hours you will be eligible for a $1,500 tax credit (25% of their first $6,000 in wages). When they reach 400 hours of employment that goes up to 40% of the first $6,000 in wages.
